Catwalk for Charity VI

Ryan Miller dressed as Doc Holliday from Tombstone

On Sunday December 4th, 2011, the 6th annual Catwalk for Charity was held at the Town Ballroom. This is Ryan Miller’s Steadfast Foundation’s annual fundraiser. The Steadfast Foundation benefits Carly’s Club and also helps raise funds for cancer research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Their goal is to provide patients and their families with support to improve their circumstances and attitude, giving them the best environment and a better ability to battle their disease.

This year’s theme was country western with the title “Wrangling for a Cause”. I think every cowboy and cowgirl can agree that this was the best Catwalk yet!

There were black carpet interviews by Ken Baker from E! Entertainment, food from over 18 different restaurants, and music from Maddie Larkin, Wild Nik West, Scott Milatello & the Heritage, and national recording artist Craig Morgan who closed the show with an amazing concert!

Of course the silent and live auctions were very exciting. A signed Toby Keith guitar, male and female black lab puppies, a private 10 course mean for 20 people at Sea Bar, and travel time with the Buffalo Sabres were among many other fantastic packages and items.

The actual Catwalk portion was truly an incredible sight! No one will ever forget Harry Neal and Rick Jeanneret dressed as Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Following them, the Buffalo Sabres’ saddled up and strutted their stuff in the finest country western attire from DC Theatrics. Highlights include Zach Kassian and Brayden McNabb dressed as a horse in “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” with Derek Roy as the cowboy, Tyler Ennis and Tyler Myers dressed up as rodeo clowns equipped with cow print chaps, and Jordan Leopold dressed as Willie Nelson in “On the Road Again.” Ryan Miller’s family even joined the boys up on stage at the end for a celebration dance!

It was definitely a night for the books… Can’t wait for next year!

2011 Allstar game, Home Run Derby and the ESPY’s

Thank you, Arizona! The 82nd All-Star Game and Home Run Derby came and went like a strong summer wind through the valley, and the long-awaited week left many memories I won’t soon forget: A sellout crowd of 47,994 needing little encouragement to Stand Up To Cancer after the sixth inning of the All-Star Game. If you walked around the ballpark during that moment, you were moved by seeing fans each writing a different person’s name to fill in the blank where it said: “I STAND FOR __________”

A Chase Field gametime temperature of 72 degrees, when it was 99 outside. Thanks to the cool water mists throughout town, helping everyone cope with triple-digits. There sign at a stand across the street from Chase Field that read: “Frozen Water, Large 24 oz, 3 for $5.00.” Some people call it ice. There was a  moment of silence for 9-year-old, Christina-Taylor Green, and the others who lost their lives in the January shooting down in Tucson. We’ll remember Danny Hernandez, the big hero who helped U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords — throwing out the first pitch along with Hall of Fame broadcaster Joe Garagiola.

And the parties… There were three we attended and all were at the W Hotel in Scottsdale. But the Maxim Party took the prize! Diamond in the Desert, hosted by NY Yankee Curtis Granderson. Kelley James rocked the Living Room lounge party Sunday at the W, working the names of ball players into his rhymes and improv songs.
Tons of A-list athletes and celebs mingled, including Carlos Bocanegra, captain of the U.S. national soccer team, Russell Martin and Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners, CJ Wilson of the Texas Rangers, Ricky Romero of the Toronto Blue Jays, Rickie Weeks of the Milwaukee Brewers, Alex Avila of the Detroit Tigers, Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians, Miguel Montero of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Conor Jackson of the Oakland Athletics (formerly of the Diamondbacks.)

Wearing sexy All-Star Game uniforms, hotties go-go danced on floating bases in the pool  and guests were wowed by all the things to do, including the opportunity to pose in the jersey of their favorite team for an instantly printed photo. It was fun to see all the different creative ideas they incorporated into the event!

Great job Phoenix!

On to the ESPY’s……….. the next day we flew to LA for the Espy’s in the Nokia Theatre! We had decent tickets but got upgraded to a box. A friend of mine works for Live Nation and they run the tickets for the theatre…it was awesome!!! There were three after parties and my highlight was meeting Seth Myers… and his brother!  We then went on to Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and San Diego for a baseball game…like we didn’t have enough of baseball! Petco Park is a stadium to see!

It was a whirlwind of a trip…Thank you California!

Jim Kelly Celebrity Golf Classic

On Monday, June 6th, 2011, the 25th Anniversary Jim Kelly Celebrity Classic was held at Terry Hills’ 27 hole golf course.  Kelly for Kids is committed to serving disadvantaged and disabled youth in Western New York through distribution of grant money raised throughout the year. I have been a part of the planning of the weekend long festivities for 24 years and have seen the event grow each year. It is considered one of the best if not the best golf tournaments in the NFL world of tourneys. Why you may ask…?… because we make it fun and different than all the rest. Jim started  the tournament 25 years ago to raise money for his “Kelly for Kids Foundation” and “Hunters Hope”.

The tournament was sold out with  60 fivesomes on the 27-hole layout and the attendance at the auction and party on Sunday night was a record of about 1,200. “It just goes to show this area never ceases to amaze me,” Kelly said. “Every year you think they’ve done the ultimate and they step up again.”

The tournament weekend annually raises more than $200,000 for the Kelly for Kids Foundation and the Hunter’s Hope Foundation, with this year going above the $400,000 mark. As usual, many Bills from the 1980s and ’90s were in attendance along with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman, Hall of Famer Dan Marino, Pats tight end Rob Gronkowski, Archie Manning, Ed “Too Tall” Jones and numerous others.

Through Hunter’s Hope, Jim and his wife Jill have crusaded for the expansion of newborn screening tests across the country. The Center for Disease Control & Prevention recently cited advancements in newborn screening among the 10 great public health achievements in the United States from 2001 to 2010. New York screens newborns for 54 diseases; it screened for just 11 when Kelly’s son, Hunter, was born in 1997. New York is the only state that screens for Krabbe disease, which afflicted Hunter Kelly, but three other states (New Mexico, Illinois and Missouri) have passed laws to begin screening for it.

The American College of Medical Genetics currently recommends screening for 55 diseases, which are broken into core and secondary categories. According to the CDC: “In 2003, all but four states were screening for only six of these disorders,” which include both metabolic and other heritable disorders. By April 2011, all states reported screening for at least 26 disorders on an expanded and standardized uniform panel.”

MLB Allstar Game and Home Run Derby 2011

I just got back from the NHL awards in Vegas and now off to Arizona for the Major League Baseball Game in Phoenix.  I am going to work and for pleasure.
